What is Pilates:

It’s about more than just building muscle tissue through resistance training!
It’s about a coordinated practice of both physical and mental exertion. In the 1920s, a former boxer and German military member named Joseph Pilates developed “Contrology” an exercise routine we now call Pilates. Joseph Pilates believed that with a STRONG physical body, a CALM mind and PEACEFUL spirit… we are capable of anything!

Practicing Pilates:

  • builds muscle

  • improves posture

  • enhances breathing

  • increases flexibility

  • injury prevention & recovery

  • develops mental connection to movement patterns

  • improves energy

Instructors: Maria

Maria is the owner and principal teacher at Pilates Stance.
She is a Certified Classical Pilates USA™ instructor with 10+ years of teaching experience working with women and men aged five to eighty. She has worked with everyone from a twenty-year-old just learning how to exercise, to an over sixty-year-old national raking athlete. She continues to welcome all ability levels and phases of life!
Due to her own struggles, she has an appreciation for those working through chronic conditions and/or skeletal abnormalities.
She was first introduced to pilates in 2002 while attending high school in Connecticut.  Maria then moved to Massachusetts for eight years to pursue the study of art and architecture, obtain her B.S. in design, and work for architects of various disciples.
After moving to Rhode Island in 2011 she soon completed her pilates training and left the field of architecture so she could fully dedicate her work to sharing the power of pilates with her Rhode Island community.
Maria is a proud mama of a mighty girl!  When she isn’t living the mom life or teaching pilates, she can be found dancing, running, baking, or listening to 90s hip hop or modern folk/rock.
She brings thoughtfulness to each class, striving to understand everyone’s unique bodies and goals.

“To me… Pilates is metaphor for life… it’s about finding the power within to make change!”
